Meeting Room

Film festival, Mondays, October 7-November 25.

Since we already presented a series of New York films from the 1950s, why not take a look at the way the great city was portrayed only a decade later? New York, in its infinite diversity, encompasses all genres, from sci-fi to musicals to political thrillers to whimsical romantic comedies.

10/7 at 6 pm: The Hustler (1961)
Paul Newman, Piper Laurie, George C. Scott and Jackie Gleason as Minnesota Fats. The exciting and sleazy world of competitive billiards is the backdrop for this gritty classic.

10/14 at 6 pm: The Manchurian Candidate (1962)
A sinister plot to assassinate an East Coast politician, with Frank Sinatra, Angela Lansbury, Janet Leigh and Laurence Harvey. Rated PG-13.

10/21 at 6 pm: The Pawnbroker (1964)
Director Sidney Lumet and New York City pretty much go together, don't they? Here, Rod Steiger plays a Holocaust survivor whose life is again threatened during his new life on the mean streets of the Big Apple. Under age 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian.

10/28 at 6 pm: Bells Are Ringing (1960)
Vincente Minnelli directs Judy Holliday and Dean Martin in this musical about romance between a switchboard operator and a troubled playwright.

11/4 at 6:30 pm: Barefoot in the Park (1966)
Based on a play by Neil Simon, this light comedy concerns a pair of newlyweds played by Jane Fonda and Robert Redford.

11/11 at 6:30 pm: The Young Savages (1961)
John Frankenheimer directs Burt Lancaster in this hard-edged crime feature about rival street gangs in East Harlem.

11/18 at 6:30 pm: Planet of the Apes (1968)
Not commonly referred to as a "New York film," but this science fiction classic ends with (spoiler alert!) a raving Charlton Heston in front of a half-sunken NYC landmark.

11/25 at 6:30 pm: Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961)
Perhaps Audrey Hepburn's most iconic role is the eccentrically unforgettable Holly Golightly!
